GA: Aside from agent submissions, what are the best ways that an actor can make themselves known to you?
JT: By appearing in workshops, off-off Broadway plays, and smaller theatre companies. Sending in a picture and a résumé is always a good thing. But sending in the pictures is a catch-as-catch-can thing for actor submissions. It really depends on how diligent the office is at looking at the actors’ pictures.
AK: Pictures and résumés. It’s a tough road. I can’t really say how I get to know different actors. If we’re looking for an odd type, we go to different places to find those types. If you’re looking for someone really different, you have to find the source.
EL: I really do look at pictures. I realize that it can be hard for actors to find me, since I don’t have a permanent office space. I try to go to theatre, films, and watch TV. Living in New York, I try to watch Law & Order all the time. It’s really a great resource. Suzanne Ryan does a great job casting on that show.
JBi: Write to me. Send me a flyer or postcard telling me if you are in something. If you have an agent, it’s the agent’s job to try to get me to come to see your work. It all depends on who represents you and how strongly they feel about getting someone to see you.
SK: Through postcards and sending me notices about projects that they’re involved in. No phone calls.
JBe: Let me know when you’re in a play; send me a flyer. Either I or someone who works for me will try to go down and see it. A referral from another actor or agent always helps.
LD: By working in plays, sometimes a photo submission. A lot of actors don’t have agents, and a lot of times, a photo will come in, unsolicited, by an actor, and it’s right for the role. In this business it’s timing and luck. You have to do everything you can.
